"Momma" Closes in on "M:I-2"
Tom Cruise's spy caper, laden with latex masks, earned an estimated $27 million in its second week of release, bringing its total gross to $130.7 million. Martin Lawrence's undercover cop laugh fest, in which layers and layers of latex transform the star into a massive old granny, opened with an estimated $25.6 million.
But Momma could loudly claim bragging rights because of a per screen average of $9,136 in 2,802 theaters, whereas M:I-2, dropped off 53 percent from its opening week and only managed an average of $7,391 at 3,653 sites.
It was also a personal best debut for the often trouble-plagued Lawrence. It trumped his previous best, Life, in which he shared top billing with Eddie Murphy, which opened last year with $20.4 million.
Most other movies in this week's top 10 saw considerable fall off from last week's blockbuster Memorial Day holiday business. In its third week of release, the computer-created Dinosaur dropped 52 percent, earning $12 million in the third slot; in its second week, the Jackie Chan Western Shanghai Noon lost 45 percent, earning 8.6 million in fourth place; in its fifth week, Russell Crowe's heroic Gladiator fell 40 percent, but brought its overall gross up to $138.7 million with a take of $8.1 million in the fifth slot.
The only other new movie opening was the family-oriented horse drama Running Free. Its hoofprint was very faint. It only took in $55,000 at 100 locations, way out of the top 10.
