Missy Elliott Movie Under Construction

Robert De Niro is going to help Missy Elliott get her freak onscreen.

Universal Pictures announced Wednesday that the Supa Dupa Fly rapper will play herself in the big-screen version of her life story. De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Films is set to produce the biopic, which is currently in the development stage. Elliott's manager, Mona Scott, will also shoulder some producing duties, according to Variety.

Elliott, 34, previously appeared in Honey with Jessica Alba, but this will be her first top-billed role.

She started off performing in the all-girl group Sista in the late '80s before joining up with childhood pal Timbaland, with whom she formed an enduring songwriting and production partnership. The pair contributed nine tracks to Aaliyah's 1996 album One in a Million, cementing their rep as an R&B force to be reckoned with.

Her first five albums all sold more than 1 million copies, with her bestseller to date being 2002's Under Construction, which racked up more than 2.1 million in sales. Elliott, who dropped the "Misdemeanor" moniker from her performance persona in '03, also won three consecutive Grammys (2002-04) for Best Solo Rap Performance for "Get Ur Freak On," "Scream aka Itchin'" and "Work It," respectively.

Since Elliott has worked with so many top recording artists over the years, from Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake (not at the same time, and not Super Bowl-related) to Sean "Diddy" Combs and Destiny's Child, the casting possibilities for this upcoming biopic are mind-boggling.

Either we'll get one of the biggest assortments ever of top R&B and hip-hop stars playing themselves or we'll just have to hope that the right actors are cast to capture Diddy's swagger, Beyoncé's bootyliciousness and Timbaland's sure hand in the studio.

Plus, if the story ventures into Elliott's childhood, a very capable young actress will be needed.

The hit-making rapper was born in Virginia and endured a rough childhood, all the while dreaming of future stardom. In various magazine interviews over the years, Elliott has talked about how she used to write letters to Michael and Janet Jackson begging them to take her away from her home, where she faced a violent father and memories of sexual abuse at the hands of an uncle when she was eight. Her mom, Patricia, finally packed up their stuff and left her husband when Elliott was 14.

"My mother leaving my father changed my life," Elliott told Ebony magazine. "It made me a stronger person."

Although Elliott skipped school quite a bit as a teenager, she mainly stayed out of trouble and started penning rap lyrics in her spare time.

And she's been using that inherent talent ever since, most recently cowriting the score for the gymnastics film Stick It with the Dust Brothers' Mike Simpson. "We Run This," the third single from her latest album, The Cookbook--which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 last year--served as the movie's theme song.
