And the worst thing about the Miley Cyrus bong hit?

Billy Ray Cyrus bogarted the news cycle.

MORE: Miley, the Most Valuable Partier?

If Father Cyrus doesn't tweet his "I'm so sad" sentiment, then maybe his daughter's herbal hit blows over.

And if that scenario sounds unlikely (and, all right, it does), then maybe his daughter's herbal hit blows over a little faster

But, no, Billy Ray Cyrus had to have his say. In public. On Twitter.

Suffice to say, when it seems as if you're taking your cues in family-crisis management from Michael Lohan, it's time to get new cues.

Look, is Billy Ray wrong to have concerns about Miley's recreational activities, however legal though they may be? No. Is he wrong to express those concerns? No.

Is he wrong to express those concerns after appearing to not be concerned with under-age pole dancing, an apparently racially insensitive gesture and a certain Vanity Fair pictoral? Well…

If you cut Billy Ray the slack Billy Ray didn't cut Miley, then you go, "Hey, nobody's perfect, much less consistent." And, if you're feeling generous, you add, "Besides, the guy was probably having a tough day in the midst of a tough divorce."

And if you say all that, you may be right, but Billy Ray's still wrong to have tweeted what should have been private (not that we don't appreciate the headline-fodder, Mr. Cyrus—thanks much!)

As for Miley Cyrus, let her be scolded and analyzed elsewhere for doing what scores of like-aged YouTubers before her have done. Just to be on the safe side of salvia, though, kid, don't inhale, and drive, OK?
