MGM Dusts Off the Library

Remember the scene in Goldfinger when Sean Connery's James Bond explains how he plans to thwart the titular villain's scheme? The classic "If I Were a Rich Man" segment from Fiddler on the Roof? Or Peter Sellers hilarious slapstick in Pink Panther?

Thanks to MGM, which has one of the most impressive libraries in all of filmdom, such cinematic stuff is now available online. But don't expect the entire film--just selected scenes.

Microcast, an Internet-streaming company, has teamed up with the venerable studio to put movie clips on MGM.com.

The multiyear pact also includes streaming MGM's new movie trailers and behind-the-scenes footage.

"The relationship with Microcast will enable MGM to deliver high-quality movie clips via MGM.com, allowing users to browse through notable scenes from our celebrated titles," David Rondan, executive director of operations of MGM.com, said in a statement.

Available now to PC users (a Mac version is in the works) is a collection of three-minute clips from dozens of classic MGM movies, including Rain Man, The Birdcage, Some Like It Hot, Moonstruck and the Bond franchise.

A hundred movie clips will be archived and accessible on MGM.com as part of the Trailers and Clips page. There, users will find the trailers and scenes, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews and footage, sound bites (including famous lines from Goldfinger, Blue Velvet and Honeymoon in Vegas), music ("Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," "For Your Eyes Only," "In the Heat of the Night") and photos.

Of course, the multimedia offerings also serve as a commercial for MGM's video and DVD releases. Each clip is linked to the MGM e-commerce site--the company hopes if fans are so enthralled over the trailer to Annie Hall, they'll have no problem pulling out the old Visa card and ordering the just-released DVD.
