Is there no royal Colin Firth can't admirably portray? Sure, he's played King George (and has the statues to prove it), but who knew the Brit also had a bit of Prince Charming in him?
Well, thanks to his suave saving of BAFTA-winning damsel in distress Meryl Streep during yesterday's ceremony—everyone.
Firth had the honor of handing out the Best Actress trophy at yesterday's London shindig, reading out—to no one's real surprise—Meryl's name for her work in The Iron Lady.

"Great, thanks for the loaded question," Best Actress winner Viola Davis told me privately backstage at the Shrine Sunday night, right after she'd had her rousing win over favorite Meryl Streep. I had not asked Viola if she felt guilty about trouncing Streep (as many other journalists had), but instead, I was wondering why it took a Caucasian woman (played by fab Emma Stone) to get these African-American maids in her movie motivated for change?
Sort of makes it look like it took a white woman to commandeer the Civil Rights movement, doesn't?

Now things are getting interesting.
The positively glowing cast of The Help won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, an eleventh-hour shakeup as the Academy Awards grow ever nearer. (Actors make up the largest voting bloc of the Motion Picture Academy and can swing a tight race.)

Silence may indeed have proven to be golden for the awards magnet that is The Artist. But luckily, the ever grateful and humbled recipients of this morning's Oscar nominations didn't play it quite so retro when it came to expressing thanks for their nods.
Well, except for the no-commenting George Clooney, that is. He really is taking this Hollywood throwback thing to the limit. Unless maybe he's keeping quiet out of respect for all those unfathomable snubs?
In any case, while the gracious actors, actresses, directors, writers and producers honored by the 84th Annual Academy Awards weren't lacking in sound bites, our favorite reaction of the morning goes to someone who wasn't even a nominee…

Because, in our humble opinion, the true Best Actress in a Leading Role fight will come down to heavyweights Viola Davis and Meryl Streep. And while Meryl is the favorite to clinch the victory, we strongly think there could be an Oscar night surprise.
Very, very strongly.
So what does Viola herself think of going head-to-head with a 16-time Oscar nominee (and two-time winner)? And does Ms. Davis think she can be the one to dethrone The Iron Lady?

For a silent film, The Artist sure is making a lot of noise this awards season.
Fresh off its domination of Sunday's Golden Globes, the film was the most-nominated flick today at the Orange British Academy Film Awards (aka the BAFTAs aka the British Oscars) with a whopping 12 nominations.
U.K.'s homegrown Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was next up with 11 BAFTA nominations, followed by Martin Scorsese's Hugo with nine, My Week With Marilyn with six, and The Help and War Horse, which earned five nominations apiece.

Ready for a bad pun? The Help definitely doesn't need any help stirring up award buzz!
Now that that's out of our system, let's get to the good stuff: The flick—starring Emma Stone and Oscar nominee Viola Davis—has racked up some serious noms already at the Golden Globes, SAG awards and a handful of other ritzy shows. But the real place to shine is—duh!—the Oscars.

Holiday break is officially over, which means it's back to the office (boo!) and back to the regular bitchin' gossip (yay!). And it also means that our list of 99 reasons that we still love Hollywood must finally come to an end as well.
We've had a good run discussing celebs from Lindsay Lohan to Tom Cruise and everyone in between, the hottest shows (American Horror Story, anyone?), the best movies we've seen this year (Harry Potter) and the movies we just cannot wait for (Magic Mike), but we still haven't touched on the best of the best.

And since our fave race of the Academy Awards is (duh!) the Best Actress slot, we decided to narrow down which par-tick babes we think will make the tough cut. Now that we've analyzed the SAG and Golden Globe noms for further clues, we realize our first hunches were right on target: We've settled on a list that's inspired by such iconic chicks as Marilyn Monroe and Margaret Thatcher.
