Mellencamp Keyboardist Collared!

It looks like the law came tumblin' down on Eric Franklin Rosser.

Rosser, a onetime keyboardist for "Pop" singer John Mellencamp and one of the FBI's 10 Most Wanted, was arrested Tuesday in Thailand on child pornography charges.

The musician turned fugitive was nabbed by Thai police in a residential neighborhood in northern Bangkok.

Police credit a recent airing of America's Most Wanted that profiled Rosser as a key to his capture.

Rosser, 49, had been on the run for more than a year. He has been charged with six counts of producing and distributing child pornography--including shooting a video of him having sex with an 11-year-old girl.

To elude authorities, Rosser underwent liposuction and cosmetic surgery. He apparently had traveled through Britain, France and the Netherlands before ending up in Thailand two months ago.

Rosser, who has a Thai wife residing in the United States, told investigators that he had returned to Thailand to see his 2-year-old son (it's not known who was caring for the boy). He was reportedly training for a job teaching English to children.

"I am not an evil man. Everybody thinks I am," a handcuffed Rosser, bald and goateed, told reporters after being caught. "I love Thailand, that's why I'm back here again."

A police search of his apartment Tuesday turned up an ounce of marijuana, two doctored Norwegian and Swedish passports and a dozen diskettes containing sexually explicit images of children.

Rosser, who resided in Thailand (he taught piano to children) before his legal troubles, was first taken into custody in Bangkok on February 9, 2000, after police seized hundreds of pornographic pictures and videos of underage Thai girls.

He subseqently admitted to a Thai newspaper that he had engaged in sex acts with children and was tortured by it.

The following month, a U.S. federal grand jury indicted him on six counts of producing and distributing child pornography across international lines. Before the case went to trial, he went on the lam.

The FBI had offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

A Thai magistrate said Tuesday the musician would be tried locally before being extradited to the United States. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on the Thai charges. In the United States, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the six counts against him.
