Mel Gibson, Love Counselor

Apparently, before he steered himself into a big ol' mess, Mel Gibson steered Courtney Love toward sobriety.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer that aired Tuesday on Good Morning America, the former Hole frontwoman credited the Passion of the Christ director with helping her get back on the road to recovery after a string of drug-related run-ins with the law.

Love, who says that she's been sober for 15 months, recalled an instance when she was doing drugs with a group of men in a Beverly Hills hotel room and Gibson "kept coming to the door with this cheesy grin going, 'Hi!' "

"I just kept looking at him going—I can't cuss—um, 'Blank off!' " the alt-rocker told Sawyer (who also recently had a sitdown with Gibson). "I know him, and he's a nice guy. It didn't matter who it was. It could have been Jesus. I didn't care."

Gibson had an addiction counselor with him, and when Gibson left with Love's fellow users and abusers to grab some cheeseburgers, the counselor stuck around and talked with Love.

While the "Live Through This" singer failed to pinpoint when exactly this happened, it was before Gibson's DUI stop and post-arrest meltdown.

Love was sentenced in September 2005 to 180 days in a drug treatment facility for probation violations in 2003 and 2004. At a progress-report hearing in February, the widow of Nirvana legend Kurt Cobain announced that she had "put a very gnarly drug habit behind [her].

"I've just been playing guitar and taking care of my daughter," Love said.  "I want to [take this opportunity] to let the community know I'm doing great."

Also at some point since receiving some Braveheart-style inspiration, the People vs. Larry Flynt star hit the studio (last November, actually) with longtime pal Billy Corgan to lay down some new tracks, including "How Dirty Girls Get Clean," "Sad but True" and "For Once in Your Life." Love dubbed the tapes The Rehab Demos

She's currently working on a new album with producer and ex-4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry.

Meanwhile, Love is all over these days promoting her new memoir, Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love. Donning a tiara for a royal visit to The View Tuesday (Rosie O'Donnell was dressed as Queen Victoria, Joy Behar was Queen Elizabeth II, Elizabeth Hasselbeck channeled Marie Antoinette, etc.), the singer said that her combination journal-scrapbook is going to give people a glimpse of what's going on beneath her Celebrity Skin

"The book is a definition of who I am and where I've been and my struggles," she said. "People have had to live with a wrongful idea of who I am and what I am. [This book] lets them in a little bit."
