Is Mel C Spice-Free? And Should We Care?

Attention Spice Girls fans: Mel C might not be leaving the group after all.

Yes, we know what you're thinking: "Were the Spice Girls actually still together?"

Turns out, yes. The girl-powered Brit pop group hasn't registered a blip on American radar screens since Britney Spears was in the Mickey Mouse Club. But the ladies are stirring up frenzied speculation about whether they'll stay together, after Melanie Chisholm (aka "Sporty Spice," aka "the talented one") reportedly proclaimed she was quitting the group to focus on her solo career.

While insisting "I'll always be a Spice Girl," the 27-year-old singer purportedly told Reuters news service, "I don't intend to do any more work with the Spice Girls...Really, I've not been comfortable being in the Spice Girls for probably the last two years. It doesn't feel that natural to me anymore. I've grown up, and I just feel that I want to do things my own way and not compromise."

But the band's spokesman insists there has been no breakup.

"Everyone wants to say it's over but it isn't," counters Spice Girls spokesman Alan Edwards. "As everyone knows, the Spice Girls are pursuing their own solo projects, but the Spice Girls still exists.

"What she said is that we've got no plans at the moment," he added. "It isn't the final split...Melanie C hasn't left the Spice Girls."

The Spice Girls (Mel C, Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton, Melanie "Scary Spice" Brown, Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell and Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham) debuted as a quintet in 1995, evolving from a giddy Brit novelty act to a worldwide pop sensation. With singles like "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There," their debut disc, Spice, sold some 7.3 million copies in the U.S. alone.

The girls soon followed up with another hit album, Spiceworld, which also was parlayed into the campy, Hard Day's Night-inspired film, Spice World.

But things went from spicy to downright salty in 1998, when Halliwell quit the group amid internal tension. As a quartet, the remaining girls trotted out their third disc, Forever. Since its release last November, the disc has been a commercial flop, selling just 185,000 copies.

Mel C is currently touring in support of her solo album, Northern Star. Although it hasn't broken through in the U.S., the album has become an international hit, selling 2.5 million copies worldwide.

In May, she plans to start work on a new album for release by fall of 2002. She told Reuters that, with all that the Spice Girls accomplished, it simply was time for them to focus on their own individual work.

"We were such a huge phenomenon, and there's not really anywhere else to go with that," she said. "It was a question of sacrificing our lives and trying to maintain the success, or just being honest with ourselves. We've all been very honest and we all wanted to pursue solo careers."

In the meantime, we'll all just have to find other ways to spice up our lives.
