Megadeth No More
Yes, it looks like it's time to update that Behind the Music episode because the long reign of the speed-metal gods is officially over.
The headbanging quartet decided to disband following the announcement by frontman and driving force Dave Mustaine, 40, that he's leaving the group after suffering an injury that caused severe nerve damage to his left arm and hand. Mustaine did not elaborate on the cause of the injury, only that it was not while playing guitar.
"My doctors tell me it will take about a year to make as complete a recovery as I can, and even then, we don't know how complete that is going to be," says Mustaine in a statement on the band's Website, Megadeth.com. "I am working hard and with a great team of doctors and physical therapists daily, and God willing, someday I hope to play guitar again."
Mustaine has been diagnosed as having radial neuropathy, a compression of the nerve that stretches along the forearm and hand--a career-threatening injury if your day job is to tear it up on the guitar.
"While I work on rebuilding my arm, I will take this opportunity to reappraise my career and my future," says Mustaine. "For the time being I have decided to exit Megadeth, and explore other areas of the music business where I might make a contribution without being able to play my instrument."
Whether that's producing records for other thrash bands or maybe managing one of his own, the shaggy blond axeman couldn't say. But he does say the bad luck has been an impetus to spend more time with his wife, Pam, and their two kids, Justis and Electra.
Formed by Mustaine in 1983 after he was booted out of Metallica, Megadeth is regarded (with Metallica) as one of the pioneering groups of a genre specializing in dark, often political songs played at lightspeed over a driving beat. Cofounded by Mustaine, bassist Dave Ellefson, Slayer guitarist Kerry King and drummer Lee Rauch, Megadeth has undergone many roster changes over the years, with several lead guitarists and drummers coming and going--but the glue has always been Mustaine and his indefatigable riffs.
The most recent incarnation featured Mustaine, Ellefson, guitarist Al Pitrelli and drummer Jimmy DeGrasso.
Megadeth racked up some pretty impressive career stats: seven Grammy nominations for Best Metal Performance, 13 albums (including their biggest hit, 1992's Countdown to Extinction, which reached number two on the Billboard charts), four drummers, three guitarists and one VH1 Behind the Music episode.
That Behind the Music chronicled Mustaine's drug addiction--which reportedly led to his termination by Metallica and which he has since kicked.
Megadeth's last official studio album was 2001's The World Needs a Hero, which the band followed with a massive world tour. The tour spawned the band's first live album, the double-disc Rude Awakening, which came out in March.
Says Mustaine: "I have had a terrific time singing and playing for you while I was in Megadeth...And I can never thank you, our fans past and present, enough for your loyalty and affection over the years."
Metalheads can take heart, though. The band is slated to release a DVD/VHS version of their performances, also titled Rude Awakening, next week.
