"Meet the Parents" for a Second Weekend
No newcomer was able to knock aside the popularity of the domestic comedy in which Bob and Ben (a hyper Robert De Niro and an error prone Ben Stiller) face off. The PG-13 rated Universal release earned $21.2 million, bringing its two-week gross to $58.8 million.
Nor could anything kick aside Remember the Titans. The race-relations football movie, starring Denzel Washington, remained in second place, earning another $13.1 million. The three-week gross for the PG-rated Disney release is now $64.2 million.
The four new movies which did make the top 10 list, had to settle for also-ran slots. They were all R-rated.
In third place was the Satanic thriller Lost Souls, starring Winona Ryder and Ben Chaplin. The New Line release earned a less-than-winning $8 million at 1,970 theaters.
In fourth place was the sex spoof The Ladies Man, an elaboration on Tim Meadows' Saturday Night Live skit. The Paramount release only scored a limp $5.4 million at 2,002 theaters.
Political thriller The Contender, starring Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges and Gary Oldman. The DreamWorks release didn't get much of a vote, pulling in just $5.36 million at 1,516 theaters to land in fifth place.
Coming in seventh was Robert Altman's latest roundelay Dr. T & The Women, starring Richard Gere as a glamorous gynecologist with a soft touch. The Artisan release checked in with $5 million at 1,489 theaters.
Playing in just 10 theaters, the gotta-dance British movie Billy Elliot tripped in with the best per screen average: $21,500.
Also doing well was Christopher Guest's canine romp Best in Show. In its third week of release, it chewed up $7,347 per screen at 291 sites. That was enough for tenth place, and the second best per screen ranking in the top 10 list. Number one in that category was Meet the Parents with $8,095 per 2,615 sites.
