"Matrix" Mastermind's Divorce Mess
Before he entered The Matrix, Larry Wachowski was Bound. So, at least he's familiar with the feeling.
Wachowski, who with brother Andy hatched and helmed The Matrix trilogy, as well as the 1996 noir flick Bound, has had his paychecks tied up in an exacting divorce battle.
In a restraining order issued hours before the Wachowskis' Matrix Reloaded unloaded last week in sneak-peek late-night screenings, the brothers' production companies were barred from providing Larry Wachowski with "anything of value," including, yup, money.
The order and 14 pages of related documents were posted Wednesday on the Smoking Gun.
The pages paint a picture of an estranged wife, Thea Bloom, who accuses her estranged husband, Larry Wachowski, of being "extremely dishonest with me in our personal life."
"I believe he is hiding information from me regarding our financial affairs," Bloom said in a declaration dated May 9.
Bloom says the Brothers Wachowski made $16 million off the The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, the series' concluding chapter, due out in November. The problem, as she sees it: "I do not know what happened to this money," she says in the declaration. "I never saw [these amounts] deposited in our joint accounts."
Bloom and Larry Wachowski, college sweethearts who wed in 1993, separated in July 2002. According to Bloom's court document, the split was "based on very intimate circumstances, concerning which I do not elaborate at this time for reasons of his personal privacy."
Per the Smoking Gun, Bloom filed for divorce last December.
Larry Wachowski, 37, got the attention of the British tabloids for stepping out with a lady friend at last week's Matrix Reloaded premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
In London's Sunday Mail, Jake Miller, estranged husband of Larry Wachowski's lady friend, Karin Winslow, 36, accused the Matrix man of stealing his wife, and, for good measure, cross-dressing.
"When Larry walked down the red carpet with my wife, he was probably wearing a bra and panties under his suit," Miller told the paper. He also told the paper he was a transsexual.
A message left with one of the Wachowskis' companies, EON Entertainment, regarding the Mail item was not returned. His attorney's office is not issuing a statement on the divorce case.
Other than tab reports, and court orders, things are going pretty well for Larry Wachowski.
In less than seven full days in release, Matrix Reloaded has grossed more than $150 million. Its $91.8 million opening weekend was the second biggest on record.
Per attorney documents, Larry Wachowski stands to receive five percent of the gross from the two Matrix sequels, unless he's penalized for running over budget.
Documents show that Larry Wachowski earned a combined $5 million for writing the sequels and $8.8 million for directing with brother Andy. They'll receive an additional $2.2 million when both films are turned in.
The paperwork, as posted on the Smoking Gun, also offers details on everything from the Wachowskis' video-game deals to their "posse" ("key technical personnel whose hard work...they want to reward").
It was unclear how long the court order on the Wachowskis' Anarchosie Productions would remain in effect. Per an accounting of their movie deals from Thea Bloom's attorney, the brothers aren't likely to receive residuals off the sequels until next year anyway.
