Marvin Gaye's All-Star Anthem Redo
Marvin Gaye's reaching out from beyond the grave to lend a little soul to the events surrounding next weekend's NBA All-Star Game.
With some digital retooling, the late singer will perform a duet of the national anthem with his daughter, Nona Gaye, at the Staples Center Feb. 14-- à la Natalie Cole's 1990 duet with late dad Nat on "Unforgettable."
The performance, one night before the big game Feb. 15, will be broadcast on TNT at 8 p.m. as part of a lineup of pregame festivities that includes the slamdunk and three-point-shooting contests.
The Motown man sang a memorable rendition of the Star Spangled Banner in '83 at the NBA All-Star Game at the Forum in Los Angeles, a performance credited for kicking off the trend to pair popular music with national sporting events.
A year later Gaye was dead at the hands of his father.
Now, technology will revive Gaye for the 53rd All-Star match-up as part of a "special tribute" by Gaye's daughter for the game's first return to the City of Angels since 1983, according to organizers.
Nona is best known for playing Will Smith's second wife in the movie Ali. She also appeared in The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix: Revolutions in a role originally intended for Aaliyah. Next up, Nona will star opposite Tom Hanks in the children's book adaptation The Polar Express.
The best-selling Motown artist of all-time, Gaye scored hits in the 1960s with "Pride and Joy," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." He went on to release several best-selling albums, including 1971's What's Going On, and he won two Grammys for the 1982 release Sexual Healing.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
Musical guests expected to perform at the big game that Sunday night include OutKast, Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado. Grammy frontrunner OutKast will perform the hit songs "The Way You Move" and "Hey Ya" as part of the night's player introductions. Aguilera will perform the national anthem, while Furtado will lend her pipes to the Canadian national anthem.
