Martha Issued Walking Papers

Martha Stewart has been fired.

NBC has elected not to renew the domestic diva's version of The Apprentice for a second season.

The Apprentice: Martha Stewart has been putting up less than impressive ratings since its Sept. 21 premiere, averaging just 6.8 million viewers each week, per Nielsen Media Research.

In an effort to snare viewers not already hooked on ABC's Lost, Stewart's Apprentice was moved last month from the 8 p.m. to the 9 p.m. slot on NBC's Wednesday night lineup, resulting in a slight ratings boost. However, the swap was ultimately not enough to save the show.

Despite the show's low ratings, an NBC spokesperson insists that "the plan from the very beginning was always to produce only one cycle" of the hiring-and-firing series, hence the decision not to renew.

Either way, the two-hour series finale on Dec. 21 will mark the end of Stewart's foray into Donald Trump's sector of reality television.

It's a conclusion that likely sits well with Trump, who has publicly blamed Stewart's show for diminishing his own series' ratings.

"I think there was confusion between Martha's Apprentice and mine," Trump said in an interview with ABC Radio last month. "And mine continues to do well, and, as you know, the other one has struggled very severely. I think it probably hurt mine, and I sort of predicted that it would."

While Stewart's series has been sent packing, Trump's Apprentice has reportedly been picked up for an additional two seasons, despite dropping to an average of 10 million weekly viewers, down from last season's average of 14 million.

Certainly, it's not the turn of events Stewart expected. Earlier this month, the homemaking maven told Fortune magazine that she had been led to believe that her show would be replacing Trump's Apprentice, rather than competing with it.

"It was even discussed that I would be firing the Donald on the first show," Stewart told the magazine. (Apparently, that storyline just didn't fit in.)

Though Stewart's reality days are numbered, the lifestyle guru still has another iron in the small-screen fire: her daily chatfest, Martha, which has racked up so-so ratings to date.

Stewart has also announced plans for an as-yet-untitled home-improvement series, expected to debut next year.

The upcoming series reportedly focuses on six women coming off welfare programs, recovering from bankruptcy or being released from rehab who will work together with mentors to renovate a house in Norwalk, Connecticut, which Stewart's company has already purchased for a reported $700,000.

"Our new home-improvement series will inspire and inform, while mentoring and teaching valuable life skills, from repairing brickwork, laying flooring, painting rooms and installing a functional and lovely kitchen," Stewart said in a statement last month.

For her sake, we're hoping she's finally got her paws on a good thing.
