Martha Hot for Empire Expansion
Here's hoping that Martha Stewart's fans haven't had too much of a good thing.
The domestic diva has been a whirlwind of activity since her release from prison in March and her subsequent freedom from house arrest last month, with two new television series on the airwaves and an assortment of book deals in the works.
Despite her crowded schedule, Stewart is not showing signs of slowing when it comes to the project of revitalizing her brand name. The lifestyles pro has announced plans for a third, as-yet untitled TV series to debut next year.
The latest Stewart oeuvre is reportedly a home-improvement series, with six women coming off welfare programs, recovering from bankruptcy or being released from rehab working together with mentors to renovate a house.
Stewart's company Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has already purchased a 125-year-old house in Norwalk, Connecticut that is slated to be gutted and redone over the course of the 13-part series. The 2,500-square-foot white Colonial structure set the company back a reported $700,000.
"Our new home-improvement series will inspire and inform, while mentoring and teaching valuable life skills, from repairing brickwork, laying flooring, painting rooms and installing a functional and lovely kitchen," Stewart, 64, said in a statement.
Hopefully for Stewart, the third time's a charm. While the Living boss' syndicated chatfest Martha has met with decent ratings so far, her Apprentice spinoff has racked up dismal numbers to date--so dismal, in fact, that NBC has announced plans to move the reality series from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, switching slots with the new Jerry Bruckheimer drama E-Ring.
The Apprentice: Martha Stewart now faces ABC's ratings powerhouse Lost, providing a reality outlet for those television viewers not yet hooked on JJ Abrams' small-screen equivalent of crack.
Meanwhile, Stewart is also seeking to expand her empire into the realm of music.
The homemaking maven has teamed with Sony to create Martha Stewart Living Music, a partnership organized to release compilation CDs for holidays and special occasions.
The first compilation series, Martha Stewart Living Music: The Holiday Collection, is set for release Oct. 18 on Epic Records, as both a three-disc deluxe box set and as three individual discs featuring Christmas-themed traditional, jazz and classical favorites from the likes of Mariah Carey, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and Charlotte Church.
"Great music is an important part of living, especially during the holidays. Family activities such as gift wrapping, baking, cooking and entertaining are enlivened with beautiful songs, traditional carols, fantastic vocalists, and famous musical renditions," Stewart said in a statement. "Each selection in the compilation was carefully chosen from my many favorites for the holidays. I hope the Martha Stewart Living Music Series will become part of everyone's holiday traditions."
To further appeal to her target market, Stewart includes a recipe card with each CD, offering up her ideas for the perfect holiday feast. Those who invest in the box set are treated to an added bonus of 30 recipe recipe cards, plus decoration suggestions and craft tips from the guru of good things.
