Marlee Matlin a Mommy
The actress, who turns 37 next month, gave birth to a son last Thursday, publicist Jessica Cohen has announced. The child, named Tyler Daniel Grandalski, was born in a Los Angeles-area hospital shortly after 1 p.m. and weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
The new arrival is the third child for Matlin and her husband, police officer Kevin Grandalski, who will celebrate their ninth anniversary on August 29 (trivia time: The couple tied the knot in the backyard of Henry "The Fonz" Winkler). They also have a six-year-old daughter, Sarah, and a year-and-a-half-old son, Brandon.
Matlin, deaf from a childhood illness, made a huge splash in her 1986 motion picture debut, Children of a Lesser God, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Since then, she has plied her trade in a series of TV movies and guest roles on such shows as Spin City, ER and The Practice. She garnered an Emmy nomination for her stint on Picket Fences in 1994.
More recently, Matlin has had a recurring role as lobbyist Joey Lucas on NBC's The West Wing and appeared on Nickelodeon's Blues Clues.
Matlin will release her first novel, Deaf Child Crossing, in October.
