Mark Burnett: Rock Star Wanted
Mark Burnett wants to rock.
The onetime British paratrooper turned über producer has developed a rock 'n' roll reality series with the help of an American Idol alum, reports Variety.
Burnett has poached Idol's supervising producer, David Goffin, to executive produce the as of yet untitled show for his shingle, Mark Burnett Prods.
Sources say the planned series is an edgier version of Fox's talent competition and will seek out a lead singer to front an internationally established band.
Burnett is expected to shop the music-based project to networks within the next week. But it's unlikely the series would wind up at Fox--the network is currently at odds with the unscripted TV whiz.
The fight began when Fox decided to launch its own reality boxing series, The Next Great Champ, after the network lost The Contender to NBC, Burnett's pugilist-based project in collaboration with Sylvester Stallone and Jeffrey Katzenberg.
Burnett criticized the move as "creatively outrageous" but decided against suing. Instead, he hopes to square off against Fox's Champ where it counts: On the airwaves.
Now, he's hoping to deliver a double KO with the development of his music-driven series. But don?t look for a cookie-cutter copy of Idol--Burnett's show is expected to differ in several significant ways.
Votes are unlikely to be collected via telephone, though viewers might have an impact on the outcome. Instead, the existing band is expected to play a key role in determining the end result.
More behind-the-scenes airtime is also expected, allowing viewers to get intimate with the aspiring rockers. The show's grittier music genre is also expected to set it apart from the pop-friendly tones of Idol.
There's some speculation that the series may hold international auditions, giving the show a global audience--a less than successful concept tried by Idol producers last Christmas. Also similar to Idol, the winner is likely to participate in a live concert finale before going on tour.
Let the rumble begin.
But don't take the bad blood too seriously. Burnett, who's got at least five new and a couple of returning series bowing within the next year, is executive producing a docu-series for Fox called The Casino that follows the grand reopening of Las Vegas' legendary Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino.
Also on the mastermind's slate are three new shows for the WB, including one untitled reality series and two scripted series: Commando Nanny, a comedy about a former British commando who becomes a Beverly Hills nanny based on Burnett's own life story; and Global Frequency, a midseason drama based on the novel franchise about a covert intelligence agency.
And while NBC is unlikely to dish out any new episodes of The Restaurant (Burnett is fallible!), his other babies are thriving: Survivor is in production for its ninth edition on CBS, while two more editions of The Apprentice have been ordered by NBC.
