Marilyn Manson Offends the Swiss

Marilyn Manson is upsetting people again.

The most shocking shock-rocker of them all is under criminal investigation in Switzerland after a religious group filed a formal complaint about his stage act, saying Manson went too far by breaking laws in place to protect the sanctity of Swiss religion.

Zurich District Prosecutor Michael Scherrer said he interviewed Manson before a soldout show last weekend. Various religious groups and lawmakers had tried unsuccessfully to have the show banned, stating that Manson's views were offensive to a majority of the population.

According to the complaint, Manson ripped a bible during stage shows in February 2001, as well as making incitements to violence.

It's true that Manson is never one to hold back while performing. He was once even dumped from a joint tour by Courtney Love, who proclaimed the singer too weird for her tastes. And that's saying something.

Born Brian Warner, the singer and his bandmates select their stage monikers using the first names of pop culture icons and the last names of serial killers. Manson also sometimes goes by the catchy handle Antichrist Superstar.

The macabre musician had himself baptized as a Satanist and holds the honorary title of Reverend in the Church of Satan. Hence it's not surprising that he's being taken to task for offending the Swiss-based Christians for Truth.

Manson rejected the accusations, according to District Prosecutor Scherrer, citing artistic freedom as a defense and claiming that his act was meant to inspire a debate about religion and violence. Scherrer said he had not yet decided whether to charge the cadaverous crooner.

It wouldn't be the first time Manson took heat for his stage antics.

Just months ago he was cleared by a Minnesota jury after being sued by a security guard who claimed he "endured ridicule and shame" when Manson rubbed his groin on the guard during a 2000 show.

In June 2002, he copped a plea to criminal charges in a Michigan case involving his gyrating genitalia and an uncooperative security guard. In exchange for pleading no contest to counts of disorderly conduct and assault and battery, Manson was sentenced to pay $4,000 in fines and court costs but avoided any jail time.

Earlier in the summer, officials at Six Flags Darien Lake barred Manson from appearing at the Buffalo-area venue as part of Ozzfest. The Six Flags folks deemed Manson's stage act "inappropriate."

Then, in October, Manson's set at the Freakers Ball in Kansas City was cut short after fans rushed the stage, creating a security mess. Riot police were called in to quell the mob.
