Who knew when Tom Cruise famously serenaded Kelly McGillis in Top Gun with "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" it would be a foreshadowing of things to come?

In a new interview with SheWired.com, McGillis reveals that she's gay. Now single, the 51-year-old actress told videoblogger Jennifer Corday that she was looking for a girlfriend. "I'm done with the man thing," she said. "I did that. I need to move on in life."

McGillis' breakout role, as an Amish mother in Witness opposite Harrison Ford in 1985, earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Top Gun followed in 1986, and then two years later, she played an attorney for a rape victim (a role which earned Jodie Foster an Oscar) in The Accused.

McGillis took a break from television and film in the 1990s.

Rumored to be a lesbian for quite some time, she eventually played one on TV in 2007...

McGillis portrayed a closeted Army colonel in Showtime's The L Word.

"I think that was an ongoing process from the time I was probably 12," McGillis said of coming out. "It was a long arduous journey for me."

While Miss California Carrie Prejean may not have been mentioned in the SheWired interview, she might as well have been.

"I had a lot of things happen that convinced me that God was punishing me because I was gay," McGillis said. "That was a hard process for me…Life is a freakin' journey. It's about growing and changing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who and what you are."

McGillis will next be seen on the stage, costarring along with Julia Duffy in the upcoming production of Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes at the L.A.-area Pasadena Playhouse opening on May 22.
