"Scream 3" Screams into Record Books
That's because Scream 3, the third and final chapter in the slasher series, opens today in a record 3,467 theaters--the biggest movie debut in box-office history.
And the gang's all there, with their vocal cords intact, no less. Series survivors Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette are back, along with new victims, er, castmates like Jenny McCarthy and Parker Posey to keep them company.
Scream 3 takes place in Hollywood, during the filming of Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro, which is based on the events from the original Scream. The catch: the mask-wearing, knife-wielding killer has returned with a vengeance, trying to kill all the actors in Stab 3.
Thanks to the blockbuster success of the first two Scream installments, and with little competition at the local megaplex, Dimension's Scream 3 should clean up at the box-office this weekend.
The sequel even has a chance to out-gross (no pun intended) its predecessors. When the first Scream opened in 1,413 theaters in December of 1996, it earned $6.4 million. Scream 2 opened a year later in 2,663 theaters and impressed everyone by hauling in $32.9 million.
Wild Wild West, the previous record-holder for most screens, unspooling in 3,342 theaters, snagged $36.6 million during the four-day Independence day weekend last summer.
So far, reviews are favorable, paying particular attention to Parker Posey's performance and Campbell's improved acting chops (she can now scream with the best of 'em). "This time for a better reason: the film is funny and brisk, with enough good lines to make the comedy more satisfying than the somewhat routine but still unsettling jolts to the spine," says the New York Times. "The body count is horrendously high and there's much that's grisly, but Scream 3 is also genuinely scary and also highly amusing," opines the Los Angeles Times.
Still, critics are hoping Scream 3 really is the final peep in the Wes Craven-helmed franchise. Says USA Today in a three-star review: "This third and final outing is like an older-yet-wiser sibling who knows that?Scream fans need closure, too."
