Jessica's Man of Mystery?

Jessica Simpson Jamie McCarthy/WireImage.com

You read it here first: Jessica Simpson and John Mayer looked like they were more than just friends when they hung out Saturday night at the bar of the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

So, was that Mayer with Simpson the next afternoon? It doesn't sound like it. A source reports seeing Simpson with a guy trying to keep a low profile in a hat and sunglasses, who bore a striking resemblance to her Employee of the Month costar Dane Cook.

As usual with any guy who comes into Simpson's life these days, the tabloids feverishly reported that she and Cook may have had a little romance during the making of  Employee. They've always denied it and insist they're just friends.

At about 1 p.m. on Sunday, a source reports, Simpson arrived solo at Mexicali Cocina Cantina in the Studio City area of Los Angeles. Then the Cook-alike showed up, followed by Simpson's younger sister, Ashlee, and an unidentified friend. At one point, Simpson and the mystery man left the restaurant but eventually returned to their table.

Simpson's rep insists the only other person with Jess and Ashlee at Mexicali was their mom, Tina. My source insists the woman with the Simpson sisters looked far too young to be their mom.

Cook was said to have been in Rhode Island on Sunday, shooting a movie.

If Simpson was trying to conceal something, she didn't quite succeed.  "Despite hiding behind her Louis Vuitton bag at the table," my source says, "Jess was friendly to other patrons, who were all excited and trying to talk to her and take her picture."

Meanwhile, my E! pal Ryan Seacrest asked Mayer on the American Music Awards red carpet last night if he was dating Simpson. Mayer responded, "Uh, no," but when Seacrest pressed, he avoided talking specifically about the possible romance. "I'm having a good time," Mayer said. "I'm being good to the people that are good to me, which is difficult in this town."

"I'm having a lot of fun in my life," he added.
