Jessica's Dolly-and-Daddy Debacle

Joe Simpson seems to be the only person who did not have a problem with daughter Jessica's snafu during her Dolly Parton performance, when she flubbed her "9 to 5" tribute at the Kennedy Center Honors.

I'm told Papa didn't want Jessica to reshoot the performance. He told producers that it should be left as is for the gala's CBS broadcast on Dec. 26. "All the producers were telling them, 'We need to do a pickup,' " the source says. "But Joe said it was cute. We almost cut her out of the [CBS] show. We had to beg."

Organizers insisted on a second go-round, arguing they flew someone from Los Angeles to the nation's capital just to hold her cue cards. As reported, Simpson sang the song again, but only after the audience—including the president and first lady—had left the theater.

As I reported yesterday, Simpson's camp has insisted that the only reason she slipped up was because she was so nervous performing for Parton. Cue cards, her rep says, are standard for such a gig.

Her rep declined to comment for this story.
