Liam Hemsworth is going to war.

No, the Hunger Games star isn't joining the Army, but he is taking on the role of a soldier in the Vietnam War in his upcoming flick AWOL.

So what kind of battlefield injuries did Hemsworth suffer while filming in the trenches?

Fortunately, nothing too bad.

"There's a very, very intense battle scene right at the beginning of the movie," Hemsworth's AWOL costar Austin Stowell told us at the Humane Society's Genesis Awards in Beverly Hills. "It's heart-pounding for sure."

As for injuries, Stowell said, "The most that we got was burns from the shells, because we were shooting live rounds. What would happen was, each time we went down inside the bunker, kneeling down, of course all the shells are down below you and there's nothing you can do.

"That's the worst that I went through in that scene, so imagine what these guys really went through," he said. "My heart goes out to them."

In the flick, Stowell plays a soldier who gets dumped by his hometown girl and returns to America to win her back with the help of Hemsworth.

"We're wonderful friends," Stowell said of Hemsworth. "He's a great guy. We became friends instantly."

So who's better with a gun? Stowell laughed, "I'd say me."
