Exclusive! Aretha's Message to Denzel
Weinstein Company Weinstein Company
Is it time for Aretha Franklin to start getting more respect from Hollywood?
The Queen of Soul tells me she hasn't been offered a role on the big screen since her gig in The Blues Brothers 2000 opposite James Brown in 1998. So, just this morning Ms. Franklin asked me to deliver a message to two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington.
"Hey, Denzel," she said, "give me a little play here!"
Franklin cooed, "He's a super actor, and I’m sure he would lend a little bit of his expertise to me. I think we could do something really smashing."
Currently, Franklin is getting a lot of praise in the Biz for "Never Gonna Break My Faith," her duet with Mary J. Blige on the Bobby soundtrack. Franklin scooped up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. It's just one of several nominations popping up lately for Bobby.
"My publicist called me early in the morning to tell me I had gotten the nomination," she says. "You know, that is the way to start your day."
While Franklin insists "politics is not my arena," she says Robert F. Kennedy is as relevant today as he was back then. "I think we're still fighting for some of the things that he spoke about: love and compassion and so on," she says. "We need a lot more of that—a lot more understanding and R-E-S-P-E-C-T!"
No one could have said it better.
