Beverly Hills Hair Do

Hairspray: Nikki Blonsky David James/New Line Cinema

Hairspray is almost here. It should come as no surprise to regular readers of my column that I can't wait to see this flick.

Just last night, I got a sneak peek. Nikki Blonsky, who makes her big-screen debut starring as Tracy Turnblad, performed the flick's "Good Morning, Baltimore" at the Simon Wiesenthal Center's annual National Tribute Dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The evening's master of ceremonies, Larry King, cracked about John Travolta starring in Hairspray as a woman (he plays Tracy's mom, Edna), "I don't know how Scientology is going to handle that. Tom Cruise is going to throw a fit."

Blonsky dedicated her performance to Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne, co-honchos of New Line Cinema, the studio behind Hairspray. Shaye and Lynne were presented with the Humanitarian Award by another star of Hairspray, Queen Latifah

Meanwhile, NBC superstar newswoman Ann Curry brought her dad to the awards, where she was given a Medal of Valor for her work covering Darfur. "He would say this to me over and over: 'Do something of service. Help others,' " Curry said, adding, "He was actually hoping I would join the service."

"I didn't join the service, but I did get a medal," Curry said. "And guess what, Daddy? It's for valor!"

Medals of Valor were also given posthumously to Prof. Liviu Librescu, a Holocaust survivor who was killed in the Virginia Tech massacre, and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin

The night raised $1.5 million for the Wiesenthal Center.
