"Ally" a "Quality" Comedy

Love her, love her not--Ally McBeal is both adored and despised, not just in her own mind but also in the opinion of viewers.

But Viewers for Quality Television knows where it stands on the Fox series about the emotional turmoil of the miniskirted lawyer. The organization awarded the Emmy-nominated show its Best Quality Comedy honor and also dubbed Calista Flockhart, who plays the title role, Best Actress Quality Comedy.

VQT, founded in 1984 by Dorothy Swanson, following her successful grassroots campaign to bring back Cagney & Lacey, describes itself as a positive viewer organization with no other agenda than influencing the commercial networks to retain their critically acclaimed series rather than bow to ratings.

VQT's endorsement of Ally McBeal is in sharp contrast to the recent condemnation of Ally's antics from the Parents Television Council. The council, whose agenda is to bring "responsibility to television programming," put the show on its Dirty Dozen list, citing Ally's heavy dependence on overt sexual content, including penis jokes.

Ally creator David E. Kelley also earned VQT Best Drama kudos for his Emmy-nominated The Practice. The show also scored Best Supporting Actor for Steve Harris, who plays the intense Eugene Young, and Best Recurring Player for John Larroquette--who, as the brilliant, crazy Joey Heric, keeps getting away with murder on the ABC legal series.

ABC snared five "Q" awards, to be presented October 3 in Burbank, California. NYPD Blue star Dennis Franz was named Best Actor Quality Drama and the network's canceled religious drama, Nothing Sacred, ignored by the Emmys, earned the Founder's Award.

VQT's current project is the resurrection of Nothing Sacred ("If not new episodes, then at least in reruns"). There are also ongoing campaigns directed at bringing back CBS' Brooklyn South and Jane Seymour's Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

Meanwhile, CBS's Everybody Loves Raymond earned a Best Supporting Q Award for veteran actress Doris Roberts. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce got acting nods for NBC's Frasier and Gloria Reuben for the network's ER. Gillian Anderson won best actress for Fox's The X-Files.
