Mandy Definitely Out of His Minds
Mandy Patinkin is not only out of sight on the fall TV season, he's completely out of Minds.
Days after news broke that the Criminal Minds star was MIA from the third-season premiere's table read, Patinkin and producers have announced that the Emmy-winning actor has left the series at his request.
"Due to creative differences, Mandy has asked not to return to Criminal Minds this season," the actor's publicist said in a statement. "Mandy would like to thank the studios and network for releasing him from the series and he wishes the cast and crew continued success in all of their endeavors and looks forward to continuing to work with the Disney and CBS companies in other capacities in the future."
CBS and ABC Studios, which produces the show, seconded the amicability of the depature and denied speculation that the Patinkin's absence, first reported by E! Online's TV blog, was the result of a financial dispute.
"Last week, Mandy Patinkin asked to be released from his role on Criminal Minds," the network and studio said in a joint statement. "We have honored this request, which was not in any way connected to contract negotiations or salary issues.
"We thank Mandy for helping to make Criminal Minds a strong and successful series, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors."
The show will go on. CBS said that Criminal Minds will address the exit of Patinkin's Jason Gideon early in the upcoming season and that a new character will be added to the show's crack team of FBI profilers. Thomas Gibson, Paget Brewster and Shemar Moore also star.
Last week, producers of the procedural put out a casting call for a character nearly identical to Patinkin's.
Losing a lead character is a tricky proposition and the powers that be hope the transition will be seamless. Criminal Minds is one of CBS' top-rated shows, averaging 14 million viewers last season and consistently ranking among Nielsen's top 20.
