Man Shot During Fiddy Radio Q&A
Where 50 Cent goes, bullets seem to follow.
As the death-defying rapper appeared at a New York City hip-hop radio station Monday night, a man was shot in the lobby--apparently in a dispute related to Fiddy's G-Unit posse.
According to an NYPD spokeswoman, an unidentified assailant opened fire at about 10 p.m. in the lobby of WQHT-FM, aka Hot 97, injuring 24-year-old Kevin Reed of Los Angeles in the leg. The shooter got away. Reed, meanwhile, was taken to nearby St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Authorities have launched an investigation but have yet to determine a motive.
According to MTV News, the shooting occurred after the rap superstar told Funkmaster Flex's show that he had decided to boot chart-topping protégé the Game from the G-Unit club.
Appearing onair with G-Unit members Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo and Olivia to promote Thursday's release of his new album, The Massacre, 50 Cent explained the friction, calling the young emcee disloyal for not backing up Fiddy in his rivalry with rapper Nas in his track "Piggy Back," as well as the Game's plans to even make nice by recording a track with Nas. "He's gone," said 50 Cent.
Fiddy also claimed to have rescued the Game's record deal with Interscope and took credit for writing many of the choruses on the young rapper's debut disc, The Documentary, which opened at number one in January.
And that's when things got hazy.
The Game, who had taken part in the interview earlier in the evening before leaving the station, returned with his entourage and tried to get back in the building as 50 Cent held forth. They were denied access, and an altercation ensued outside the building, during which bullets were sprayed and Reed was hit near his hip.
Initially reports said that Reed--who hails from the Game's hometown of Compton--was a security guard for 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson. But Reed apparently works for the Game, aka Jayceon Taylor.
The New York Post reported that the unidentified suspect, who remains at large, tried to make a getaway in a snowplow (the city was blanketed with 10 inches of snow Monday night) before fleeing on foot.
Meanwhile, gunshots erupted later in the evening outside the office of 50 Cent's company, Violator Management, though no one was hurt.
Investigators declined to comment on whether the shootings were connected to the Game being fired. A rep for Interscope Records was unavailable.
Like his ex- boss, the Game is a former gang member who supposedly changed his ways after being shot and nearly killed; 50 Cent famously survived nine gunshots and dodged an attempt on his life a year and a half ago
Monday's shooting spree is the latest to befall Hot 97. A bodyguard from Lil' Kim's posse was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in a 2001 shooting that took place there. The rap diva is currently on trial on charges she perjured herself before a grand jury investigating that incident.
