Madonna Still Not Adopting
Despite reports to the contrary, Madonna has opened her heart--but not yet her home--to an orphan of Malawi.
The pop star paid another visit to an orphanage in the impoverished African nation on Saturday, amid rampant rumors that she and husband Guy Ritchie plan to adopt a boy orphaned by AIDS. It was the singer's third orphanage visit since she arrived in Malawi on Wednesday.
A 12-year-old resident of the church-run Home of Hope orphanage told the Associated Press that it was the second time Madonna had visited that home. Other residents said they had heard the star planned to adopt a boy named Davie and take him back to the United States.
Malawi government officials have also said Madonna was planning to adopt a boy from the country, though they have stated she had not yet filed any paperwork. However, the singer's longtime rep, Liz Rosenberg, has continued to deny the rumors.
"I can confirm Madonna is in Malawi on a private visit," Rosenberg told E! News last week. "Despite reports stating otherwise, she has not adopted a baby boy."
Rosenberg said the star was in the country working towards humanitarian projects in connection with her Raising Malawi foundation. In August, the singer pledged $3 million to aid children in the poverty and AIDS-stricken nation. Her plans include building a care center that will feed up to 4,000 Malawi orphans.
Most of the specifics about the Material Girl's visit to Malawi have been kept secret, though the singer reportedly missed a meeting with a top government minister on Friday because she was busy at another orphanage.
The singer and her entourage have set up camp at the Kumbali Lodge in a wealthier part of Malawi's capital, Lilongwe. The fitness-obsessed star was spotted jogging around the property on Saturday, per the AP.
A member of Madonna's security staff, who gave his name only as Steve, told the AP that star planned on sticking around for a while.
"We are not leaving soon," Steve said. "We are here for a while."
For now, the "Like a Virgin" singer remains a mother of just two: nine-year-old Lourdes and five-year-old Rocco.
