Madonna May Adopt Again

Madonna may not be through pushing her love over the borderline.

Despite the international furor touched off by her Malawian adoption, the 48-year-old singer told the BBC she would consider adopting from abroad again at some point in the future.

"I wouldn't rule it out…but I would like to experience David for a while and see how it works out," Madonna said.

She said she was shocked by the amount of negative attention her adoption had received.

"I didn’t expect to be accused of kidnapping, of doing something illegal," she said in a Dateline interview. "I didn’t expect to be demonized."

The "Like a Virgin" singer, who is the mother of 10-year-old Lourdes and six-year-old Rocco, said she and her husband, Guy Ritchie, had been considering adoption for two years.

She said she was captivated by footage of David from a documentary Ritchie shot in Malawi in April.

"I kept saying, 'Who’s that baby? And who is that boy?' I was drawn to his face and something about him, his eyes,' " she said on Dateline.

"And I became completely fixated on, 'I have to help him, whether he is my child or not.' "

Madonna claimed that she had offered to take David out of the orphanage and reunite him with his father, providing financial support so he could grow up with his family. She said the father, Yohane Banda, turned down her offer.

"He said no. I couldn’t really understand that decision," she said.

As a result, the Material Mom brought one-year-old David home to London last month, amid protests from civil rights groups who are fighting to block her adoption in Malawi's High Court.

She and Ritchie were granted an interim court waiver allowing them to take temporary custody of David for 18 months, after which point the adoption can be made official.

Madonna adamantly denied speculation that her celebrity had given her any special circumstances when it came to adopting David.

However, she said she would like to see Africa's adoption laws changed to make it easier for children in need to find homes.

"I would like to get the adoption laws changed, because I consider what is going on in Africa a state of emergency," she said. "When you have an entire adult population wiped out and no one to look after these children, you've got to address the laws and make adoption easier for people."
