Weekend Movie Binge: Bourne Again, Spidey Prep

The Bourne Ultimatum: Matt Damon Jasin Boland/Unversal Studios
Little nicer weather in L.A. finally, so I played most of the weekend in the backyard, in the hammock, catching up on the trades. That and watching flicks, as usual. Real quick, as we do every Monday, a wrap-up of what I took in:

1. The Bourne Identity
A timeless film that could have been made in any era. It doesn't rely on special effects, it created a masterful action franchise and Matt Damon is—right?—born for the role. Can't wait for Ultimatum this summer. Could you see Bourne in some kind of weekly TV series? Now, that would be dope.

2. Trading Places
My all-time favorite, or at least a consistent top three. Simple premise, great one-liners and supporting characters in addition to classic performances from Dan and Eddie. Also, like great comedies of this era—Stripes, Coming to America and Ghostbusters—the film has a slight political undertone.
Sexy Beast: Ray Winstone Fox Searchlight Pictures/ZUMAPress.com
3. Sexy Beast
Great stuff, great actors. Ray Winstone, who American audiences are more familiar with now thanks to The Departed, Sir Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane star in this classic British gangster flick. Again, a movie that could have been made in any era. Good writing and good acting are timeless.

4. Spider-Man
I've seen it dozens of times, but I figured it'd be cool to watch this and the sequel while boning up for my Spider-Man 3 interviews Friday. I love how it's shot in NYC, and some of the web sequences are just incredible. Can't wait to see what they come up with a few years later.

Back in the day, there was a teaser for Spider-Man that featured Spidey catching a helicopter full of bank robbers in a giant web between the Twin Towers. The spot was, of course, pulled following 9-11, but the buildings remained in the skyline of the film. I hope they continue to use some new New York locations, too, so they can be immortalized in the movies.

5. The Knicks
It's over. They've been mathematically eliminated, and I'm crushed. Actually, I'd be lying if I said I didn't see this coming, even though it's been a great year for Knicks fans. Way to keep the faith to the entire Orange and Blue nation. Mardy Collins for mayor!
