Indie Summit: Making the Trek to Breck

Greetings from the Breckenridge Film Festival, in the heart of the Colorado Rockies. This is God's country up here. I've been coming to this festival my entire life, as my dad has been its host for 26 years. I've helped him out a little in recent years when we've had guests like Jon Favreau, Connie Nielsen, Lou Diamond Phillips, David Semel (90210 associate producer and creator of American Dreams) and Michael York, to name a few.
The festival's not Sundance, Cannes or Tribeca. It's not even Palm Springs or Telluride. No films are sold here for distribution, Diddy doesn't do concerts, and I don't leave here with free crap I'll never use from companies I've never heard of.
The focus is movies. What a novel idea, right?!

Last night the festival opened with Surf's Up, the best animated movie of the summer, and Death at a Funeral. Besides a strong lineup of indies, the fest also features September Dawn, with my new buddy Jon Voight, and the closing-night film is Rescue Dawn, which is already generating Oscar buzz for Christian Bale. Not a bad lineup for a little festival in the middle of nowhere!
Another reason I love it out here is that I can hit a golf ball a mile—it's 9,600 feet above sea level, after all! I even have an oxygen tank hooked up in my room. For real. It's a sneak peek into my 90s.
But enough about my geriatric future! A film fest like Breck should inspire you guys to get involved with the film festivals in your community. Pretty much every town, country or region has an event celebrating films each year, so sign up! Go to the movies they're showing, be a volunteer and support indie films.
