Box Office Science: Spidey Spawn and Shia Power

Spider-Man 3 Columbia Pictures

What a crazy weekend! Of course, the big news has something to do with spiders, but it goes deeper than all that. Let me break down what we really learned:

Shia Might Have Superpowers:  First off, big shout out to Disturbia for holding down No. 2 this weekend at a very tricky box office. Yeah Spider-Man 3 broke records and shattered the globe and all that, but the boy Shia LaBeouf proved he's struck a cord with a generation, and in his fourth week out, surpassed the only other big release, the Drew Barrymore-Eric Bana mess that is Lucky You.

Spiders Never Sleep:  Of course the big news is Spidey 3 doing just under $150 million in the states, breaking the record for the biggest opening...ever. Sony made so much money that, not only did they announce a fourth installment, as many insiders believed they would, but they backed that up announcing numbers five and six. Three more Spidey flicks, guaranteed to drop, in our lifetime! Nobody knows yet if Tobey, Sam, and Kirsten are back for the next trilogy, but with this much money involved, why not?!

The Action's Over There:  The real story with Spidey is that the film has already done $375 million around the globe, with huge overseas ticket sales. This is a great sign for Hollywood, as the big summer movies traditionally play best around the world. Look for more franchise, "event" movies to start debuting in foreign properties—like Spidey 3 did in Japan—and everything else the same day as the American release.

Enough with the numbers, though. What'd you think of Spidey 3?
