Love in Court; Avoids Arrest
She might think she's America's sweetheart, but Courtney Love needed to show up in a Beverly Hills courthouse Tuesday to escape arrest.
The erratic rocker, who faces two felony drug possession charges, had been warned to be there or else after missing a court date last week.
Beverly Hills Superior Court Judge Elden Fox issued the bench warrant last Wednesday after Love left him high and dry. Her attorney at the time, William J. Genego, chalked up his client's absence to "security concerns" but failed to elaborate.
According to Los Angeles-based City News Service, Love was harassed at her previous hearing by a self-described "documentarian" who blames her for the death of late hubby Kurt Cobain.
This time around, Love was escorted by several burly bodyguards and sheriff's deputies.
Her appearance prompted Judge Lisa Hart Cole to toss the arrest warrant and schedule a preliminary hearing for March 16.
MIA from Love's side was attorney Genego, who officially withdrew from the case Tuesday. Ross A. Nabatoff, who joined the defense team last week, took over as lead counsel.
The new attorney may have Love change her innocent plea as part of a deal with prosecutors. The court is reportedly close to recommending the former Hole frontwoman enter rehab in exchange for pleading guilty to possession of the painkillers hydrocodone and oxycodone.
The convictions would be wiped from her slate after successful completion of the drug-treatment program.
Love's legal woes stem from Oct. 2, 2003, when she was arrested for smashing windows and attempting to break into her ex-boyfriend's home while under the influence of a controlled substance.
At that point Love was just facing a misdemeanor charge, and she posted bail and returned to her own Beverly Hills home where she proceeded to overdose on painkillers and was hospitalized, which resulted in the additional felony counts.
A hearing on the misdemeanor charge is scheduled for Feb. 23.
Love's rock star antics also cost her custody of her 11-year-old daughter, Frances Bean. The girl has been living with Love's stepfather and stepsister while Family Services determines whether Love is a fit mother.
But it's authorities who have it all wrong, the singer-actress told Howard Stern during a phone call to his radio show last Thursday to proclaim her innocence and promote her new solo album, America's Sweetheart.
"I didn't throw any rocks at the window. I kicked in the door because I didn't have the key!" she insisted. "It's my house! How would you like it? A kick in the door and you lose your kid, over nothing? Over an Ambien and some pills?"
Love also rebuffed Stern's advice to clean up her act, saying she had valid medical reasons for taking the drugs. "I certainly take it with a doctor's guidance, a small amount when I'm in pain. You're not the boss of me. Let's let the doctors decide."
