"Lost" Thief Found, Indicted
Sawyer may not be getting any help from the Others, but another unknown, island-dwelling group of 12 are doing their best to maintain his safety.
Ruben E. Royce, the man accused of robbing Lost star Josh Holloway and his wife at gunpoint last fall, as well as carrying out four other home robberies, has been indicted by an Oahu grand jury.
Royce, 21, has been charged with 30 felony counts stemming from his three-week crime spree last October, including attempted second-degree murder, armed robbery, first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, fraudulent use of a credit card and firearm violations.
At roughly 4 a.m. on Oct. 12, Royce allegedly broke into the Holloways' home while the TV star, 36, and his wife, Yessica, 28, were asleep. Wearing a mask and pointing a gun at the couple, Royce allegedly made off with money, credit cards and Holloway's Mercedes-Benz, threatening to shoot the duo if they didn't open their bedroom door and hand over the valuable goods. Police later found the abandoned car.
Luckily, neither Holloway was harmed.
"My family and I are fine and appreciate everyone's concerns and good thoughts," the Details cover boy said after the shake-up. "We are very grateful for the help of the Honolulu Police Department and the support of the local community."
City Deputy Prosecutor Maurice Arrisgado said that while Royce chose to break into random homes around Honolulu--provided there were expensive cars out front or some other indication the residents were wealthy--his targeting of Holloway may have been planned.
Arrisgado told the court that Royce likely knew which home belonged to the Lost star, as he used to live near the family's estate in Hawaii Kai.
Royce was arrested a little less than a week after the incident, after a standoff near a Honolulu elementary school, which resulted in the alleged law-breaker being shot with pepper spray and wooden bullets.
In addition to the famous victim, Royce has also been charged with robbing an apartment near the University of Hawaii, during which two residents attempted to block the door, only to have Royce allegedly begin firing into the apartment. That altercation resulted in the attempted murder charge, which could land Royce in prison for life.
In another of his alleged string of increasingly violent robberies, Royce was accused of seriously injuring a female senior citizen after forcing her into opening her door.
A man accused of acting as Royce's accomplice in two of the robberies, though not Holloway's, Chanhthay Khounkeo, was also indicted Thursday.
While Holloway wasn't present in court yesterday, he did testify at a grand jury session last month.
As for Royce, he maintains his innocence, and will plead not guilty at his arraignment, per his lawyer.
It's shaping up to be a busy year for Royce. He was already on probation at the time of his arrest for two auto theft cases and is currently at the Oahu Community Correctional Facility--the brief home of former Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez--awaiting separate trials in those cases.
Bail is set at $1 million.
