"Lost" Robbery Suspect Found
The man suspected of robbing Lost star Josh Holloway's home has been found.
Police arrested Ruben Royce, 20, Tuesday morning during a standoff near a Honolulu elementary school, during which the alleged robber was shot with pepper spray pellets and wooden bullets.
Royce is reportedly a suspect in several home invasion cases in addition to the Holloway break-in, according to the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into another home Thursday and assaulting his girlfriend, as well as on three counts of abuse of a household member and two counts of violating a temporary restraining order from a previous incident.
Police had been staking out a neighborhood home where they believed Royce was hiding. When they failed to spot him, officers began searching from street to street until they saw him riding around in a two-door Honda. They trailed the car until it was blocked by a police van, then fired non-lethal rounds after the men initially refused to exit the car.
The 20-year-old driver of the car in which Royce was riding was also arrested on two counts of reckless driving.
Police said Royce's description matched the description provided by the Lost star and his wife, Yessica.
The couple were awakened around 4 a.m. last Wednesday by a man who pointed a gun at them and demanded their money. He then took Holloway's car keys and fled in the couple's Mercedes-Benz, which was later found abandoned in the area.
Though they were left shaken by the experience, neither Holloway was harmed in the robbery.
"My family and I are fine and appreciate everyone's concerns and good thoughts," Holloway, who plays tough-talking Sawyer on the ABC series, said in a statement. "We are very grateful for the help of the Honolulu Police Department and the support of the local community."
At a news conference, police denied that they used extra-aggressive tactics to apprehend the suspect because of Holloway's celebrity status.
"It's the media that made the Holloway case a very high-profile case for us, but we've treated this investigation like every other investigation," Captain Frank Fujii said.
The commotion caused by the standoff forced the lockdown of the nearby Aliolani Elementary School, teachers said.
Holloway's robbery wasn't the only threatening occurrence to befall a Lost cast member last week.
Just hours after the robbery, Harold Perrineau, who plays Michael on the show, and his wife, Brittany, said they were followed by two men as they drove to fellow cast member Daniel Dae Kim's house.
Brittany Perrineau told the Honolulu Advertiser that her husband made a series of quick turns in an effort to lose the men, but when he couldn't shake them, he called Kim and told him to stay inside. The car then made a quick U-turn and sped away. The actor did not report the incident to police.
"Hawaii is a lovely place to let your kids run around and leave your door unlocked, but definitely this has been a wake-up call," Brittany Perrineau told the Advertiser. "Maybe we need to be more private than we've been."
In spite of their security setbacks, at least Holloway and Perrineau can feel safe reveling in the success of their show.
Lost was the third most-watched show for the week ended Sunday, with some 21.7 million viewers tuning in to get their island fix.
