Lollapalooza '04 Lineup Unveiled
Another summer, another Lollapalooza.
After getting back on its feet last year following a five-year layoff, alt-rock's seminal touring festival is hitting the road again with another stellar lineup, along with the requisite moshing, New Age vibes, body-art booths and, natch, those overpriced bottles of water.
In a first, however, each stop on this year's traveling carnival will take place over two days instead of just one---meaning fans will have more bands to check out, including a plethora of up-and-comers on the second stage just waiting to be discovered.
As usual, Lollapalooza offers something for everyone, including the avant-garde distortion of Sonic Youth, the moody Brit pop of Morrissey, the dark psychedelia of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club on the first day, and jam band noodlings of the String Cheese Incident, the indie pop sound of the Flaming Lips and the experimental soundscapes of the Polyphonic Spree on the second.
They'll be joined on various days by PJ Harvey, Gomez, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Le Tigre, Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, the Walkmen, Danger Mouse, Datsuns, Elbow, the Thrills, Wheat, Sparta, Plus Mass Gamings and Just beCauses.
In case you're wondering what's up with Lollapalooza's chief visionary and cofounder, Perry Farrell--the wiry, spaced-out frontman of Jane's Addiction, which headlined the very first festival and last year's revival--he will be on hand both days to offer up "organic electro-dub-breakbeat grooviness" under his turntable pseudonym, DJ Peretz.
According to concert trade Pollstar, more acts will be added in the coming weeks.
Lollapalooza is expected to kick off July 14-15 at Auburn, Washington's White River Amphitheater near Seattle before heading to Mountain View's Shoreline Amphitheater outside San Francisco on July 17-18. Reserved seating is priced at $49.50 per day, with lawn tickets going for $29.50; fans can also buy a two-day lawn package for $50.
With so many summer touring festivals in the running these days, including the long-running Ozzfest and Vans Warped Tour and newly formed Projekt Revolution (featuring Linkin Park, Snoop Dogg and Korn), a two-day Lolla seems like an ambitious undertaking, especially considering promoters were forced to scrap last year's tour opener in Ionia, Michigan, because of logistical problems and a stop in upstate New York due apparently to sluggish ticket sales.
Still, some music-biz types think that the lack of a huge headliner and the addition of more eclectic acts at a bargain price could draw more people to each stop.
In any case, the full slate of performers and dates is expected to be announced in the coming days.
