Loch Ness, Bigfoot...Left Eye?!
It appears the urgency has dissipated since Lopes first vanished just before Labor Day weekend. And although the R&B rebel has not been in contact with her record label, friends and family are reportedly relieved to know that she's at least been spotted--albeit in some unlikely places.
The hunt for Left Eye has spanned all corners of the globe, with the most credible evidence of her existence documented last week by Inside Edition. The syndicated TV magazine reportedly spotted her and her model boyfriend, Sean Newman, leaving a Courtyard Marriott hotel in New Orleans last Thursday. Meanwhile, Matt Shelton, a publicist for TLC's label, Arista Records, says other news agencies have reported seeing her everywhere from Chicago to Honduras.
"All I can say is, I believe her to be here in the 50 states," says Shelton, who, after taking his search public two weeks ago, seems a tad less concerned about the disappearance (especially given Lopes', shall we say, unpredictable behavior). "Yes, I'm always worried if we haven't spoken in a while," he adds, "but I'm not overly concerned because I believe she will appear soon...in typical 'Left Eye' fashion."
Shelton first put out the all-points-bulletin (via the New York Post's Page Six) September 7, after Lopes failed to show up for a major press conference in Las Vegas, and later was a no-show at a family gathering in Atlanta. Aside from the various unconfirmed sightings, she was last seen by business partner Ian Burke on August 31, but since then, Shelton adds, Lopes' agent has heard from her and said she's okay.
In the meantime, Shelton says Lopes' next public appearance is October 4 in London, where she's slated to host the Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards.
And while most publicists revel in saying as little as possible, Shelton seems slightly amused by the mystery--even acknowledging that during another recent spotting, Lopes and Newman were seen shopping for rings at Tiffany's in London.
"But I can't acknowledge or dispute that," he says, sounding eerily like Robert Stack from Unsolved Mysteries. "All I can do is let you know what I know."
Which, at this point, isn't a whole lot.
