Liza Hospitalized for Head Banging
Liza Minnelli remains in a New York hospital after falling out of bed and smacking her head.
Publicist Liz Rosenberg said late Monday that the entertainer was "under observation." "Tests are scheduled and I hope to know more tomorrow," the rep told E!
A spokesperson for the city's Emergency Medical Services confirmed that paramedics responded to a call at Minnelli's Manhattan residence around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
A New York police source told People magazine that the 58-year-old Oscar winner "was sleeping and she rolled out of bed. She hit her head. Her bodyguard got nervous and he called 911. He said he couldn't get her up. She wasn't bleeding. She was on the floor."
Police and EMS workers arrived at Minnelli's posh Upper East Side address and found the unconscious Minnelli. She was placed on a stretcher and taken to New York Hospital.
Minnelli has had a rough year. Her acrimonious split with former husband David Gest continues to play out in the New York courts. After their marriage went south, Gest filed a $10 million lawsuit against the Cabaret singer, accusing her of beating him while intoxicated. Minnelli denied the allegations and filed her own suit, claiming Gest bilked her out of more than $2 million dollars.
Then in November, she traded lawsuits with her former assistant and chauffeur of 10 years, M'Hammed Soumayah. Soumayah filed a $100 million claim against the multihyphenate star for battery, assault and breach of contract, accusing Minnelli of beating him and forcing him to sleep with her. Minnelli, who fired Soumayah in June, responded in kind, filing a countersuit seeking at least $250,000 in damages, plus a court order against Soumayah, accusing him of breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty.
Minnelli has a recent history of health woes. Aside from various stints in rehab to combat drug and booze abuse (most recently a "sobriety maintenance" program in 2003), she nearly died of viral encephalitis in 2000 and suffered a broken kneecap following a fall in 2003.
