Liza Hits Back
Liza Minnelli is fighting mad over estranged husband David Gest's allegations that she beat him in drunken rages.
The performer responded to Gest's $10 million claim against her with some legal action of her own, filing a suit accusing him of stealing money from her, insulting her publicly and trying to fire members of her staff who questioned his practices.
Minnelli, described modestly in the suit as a "uniquely talented actress, singer, dancer and entertainer," is seeking no less than $2 million from her former lover, according to her suit filed last week in New York State Supreme Court. (A copy of the complaint is online at the Smoking Gun.)
Minnelli claims Gest began displaying diva-esque traits, "holding himself out as the 'star.'" His behavior allegedly became odious enough that entertainment industry folks began refusing to work with Minnelli if her hubby was in tow.
Before Gest and Minnelli wed in March 2002, the duo came to a verbal agreement that Gest would receive a 10 percent fee for managing his multitalented bride. (Which, if you're keeping track, makes two agreements that shouldn't have happened between the two--the other involving the phrase "I do.")
Shortly thereafter, Minnelli's hired guns reportedly began having doubts about her significant other's business practices and asked for "an accounting and access to all underlying book and records," according to the suit. Gest allegedly denied the request.
Perhaps Gest was so against revealing his financial dealings because he was pocketing Minnelli's monies for himself and his two companies--or so her suit posits.
The stage and screen star also accuses Gest of refusing projects for her unless he was also included.
Meanwhile, Gest, who refers to himself as a "world renown event and concert producer-promoter" in his suit against Minnelli, claimed that his "alcoholic, overweight" wife became unmarketable. Gest's lawyer, Raoul Felder, claimed his client had "laid out millions of dollars" to produce Minnelli's shows and had lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result.
Both sides seem to agree that their bizarre union officially reached the breaking point during a turbulent stay in a London hotel last June.
From Gest's viewpoint, it was during this stay that a vodka-fueled Minnelli allegedly beat him badly enough to cause "severe injuries about the head" and leaving him with a "virtually constant, unrelenting" headache.
Meanwhile, Minnelli claims it was during this time period that she officially terminated her business arrangement with her husband after deciding that Gest had "failed to conduct himself with the level of trust, honesty and fair dealing which he owed [her] as his agent."
The two separated a month later, and Minnelli filed for divorce last month.
The dissolution of Minnelli's fourth marriage and Gest's first should come as a surprise to no one.
After all, the whole union was courtesy of the matchmaking skills of none other than Michael Jackson. 'Nuff said.
