Liza Beats Down Video Request
If Liza Minnelli has her way, a video interview about the assault charges leveled against her by ex-hubbie David Gest will be out for the count.
Gest is suing Minnelli for divorce and assault, and as pretrial questioning begins, Liza is already getting punchy over an attempt by Gest's lawyer to conduct a videotaped interview.
Both camps are all fired up about the plan, with Gest's lawyer vowing to appeal any ruling that excuses Minnelli from her on-camera duties.
"She doesn't want me to videotape her," Gest lawyer Raoul Felder told reporters after a Thursday court hearing. "They [Minnelli's lawyers] don't want it because they say it'll embarrass her."
Felder maintains that he needs to have tape the deposition to better understand and study Minnelli's testimony.
But Minnelli is not ready for her closeup. Her legal crew promises to continue to fight the videotape Q&A, claiming they fear "potential abuse" of its contents. "It's putting her in a position of having a video that could end up in the press," Minnelli's lawyer Dorothy Weber said during the hearing.
Neither Gest nor Minnelli attended Thursday's hearing. No word on Minnelli's reason for absence, but Gest is still in Hawaii recovering from his "permanent injuries" at the hands of his melodramatic ex-wife. (He skipped out on an earlier hearing this month because he is suffering "excruciating and unrelenting pain"--which is why he filed his $10 million suit against his ex.)
It seems, however, that Gest is not so ill that he can't talk to Dateline.
Gest recently taped his first post-breakup interview from his physical rehab center in Hawaii. During the sit-down he spilled the beans about his marriage and split with Liza, including the injuries she supposedly inflicted upon him during a drunken rage.
"People will finally see the truth of what happened between Liza and I," Gest said in a statement. "I think my first interview in seven months will speak for itself."
The interview will air during February sweeps on NBC.
For the record, Gest isn't the only member of the gruesome twosome who is flinging out lawsuits. Liza is also suing him for $2 million, claiming he stole money from her.
All this after just a little more than a year of marriage. The two tied the knot at a star-studded extravaganza March 16, 2002. They parted ways in July 2003.
