Lindsay's Independent Streak

Lindsay Lohan is taking a detour from fender-benders, not to mention Disney movies.

The traffic-challenged Herbie: Fully Loaded star will seek to make a mark as an indie actor in a low-budget Emilio Estevez drama about the day Senator Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. Lohan's casting was first reported in Thursday's Hollywood Reporter.

An ensemble piece set in Los Angeles in 1968, Bobby also features Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood and Estevez. Hopkins doubles as an executive producer; Estevez triples as the writer, director and producer.

Lohan will play the unintended love interest of Wood, according to the Reporter.

"Lindsay, who you do not think of as an indie film actress, is an inspired choice and is the heart of the movie," Bobby producer Edward Bass said in the trade paper.

When not dining along paparazzi-packed Robertson Boulevard, promoting her pop career, and extracting herself from car accidents (there have been three in the last 14 months), Lohan, 19, has talked about how she would like to get back to her roots in the theater...er, scratch that--her roots are TV commercials. She has, however, talked about how she'd like to be taken seriously as a thespian.

"I think everyone looks for that role where it's a stretch, and you can be kind of a bit edgier and push the envelope a little bit," Lohan told Film Monthly in June.

On screen, Lohan is best known for her kid and teen roles in several Disney movies, from The Parent Trap to Herbie. While not an indie, the hit comedy Mean Girls showcased Lohan's non-Disney bite.

Production on Bobby is scheduled to begin next week. Lohan's newfound indie spirit already has been captured in the Robert Altman comedy, A Prairie Home Companion, about the National Public Radio show that Disney Radio totally would never, ever air. Oscar-winners Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline and Tommy Lee Jones are among Lohan's costars in that film, due out in 2006.

For the 43-year-old Estevez, Bobby is return to the multi-hyphenate life he has pursued regularly in between Mighty Ducks paydays. Recent directing efforts include the 2005 concert film, Culture Clash in AmeriCCa, and the 2000 Showtime movie, Rated X, about the porn world's infamous Mitchell brothers.
