Lindsay Talks Rehab, Recovery
Lindsay Lohan is fresh out of rehab and already back in the tabloids.
In postrehab sitdowns with a pair of celebrity weeklies, Lohan called her time at Utah's Cirque Lodge treatment center a life-changing experience.
"It made me look at myself and all of the people, places and things in my life in a different way," the 21-year-old star told OK! magazine.
To In Touch Weekly, she admitted it was hard for her to surrender to the program but ultimately rewarding. "It was really humbling for me, but I liked how I was treated as a normal person. I had to look out for myself."
Lohan said she is determined to keep the focus on her sobriety, while avoiding the pitfalls that first sent her down the path to self-destruction.
"I hit rock bottom," she told OK! of the July arrest that immediately preceded her return to rehab. "Everything in my life came to a point where I had to make a decision; the arrest that night helped me come to a point where I had to make one."
She said she recognizes that curbing her clubbing habit will play a key part in her commitment to staying clean.
"The biggest thing is not being in L.A. and staying away from the nightlife," Lohan told In Touch. "Going out all the time was very self-destructive. Partying and having all of those pictures taken distracts from the work that I do. It's not why I started acting. I didn't get into acting to be written about. It kind of just happened—so I accept that it's my life. But there are some things I can do to make changes and grow up."
While she's prepared to change the circumstances in her life, Lohan is clear that she's "absolutely not" leaving show business.
"I'm here to stay," she told OK! "My talent is a gift, and I'm going to use it in the right ways."
Next up, the actress is due to shoot the tango-based film Dare to Love Me. After she wraps filming, she says she intends to return to Utah, so she can "stay focused and avoid other distractions."
She admits that relapse remains a concern. "If I wasn't [worried]," she said, "I'd be living in denial. Temptation is always there, but now I'll avoid it the right way."
Techniques for keeping her life on track weren't the only thing Lohan picked up in rehab. The actress confirmed to In Touch that she is dating 25-year-old snowboarder Riley Giles, whom she met while in treatment.
"Yes, I am seeing someone," she said. "His name is Riley. I am really happy and taking it day by day."
Apart from her new romance, Lohan said she's surrounding herself with "people that don’t use me and who love me for me. They are people I can trust and love in return."
Among those in her trusted circle are her family members, including dad Michael, with whom she reconnected while in treatment.
"I think it was really important for me to get a connection back with my dad, because I hadn’t had that in a while," Lohan told In Touch, calling the reunion "wonderful."
Lohan's time in rehab also led her to develop an interest in altruism and a desire to reach out to others less fortunate.
"I'm planning a trip to Africa during the second week in December," she told In Touch. "I'm working with the American Red Cross, but it is not finalized yet."
As she focuses on her recovery, the actress is eager to prove to the public that she has made the transition from party girl to responsible adult.
"I want to act like a woman rather than a teenager," she told In Touch.
"I am doing the best I can."
