Lindsay Sets Sights on Diamond
Forget a best friend—a Diamond is Lindsay Lohan's next paycheck.
The actress has signed on to star in the big-screen adaptation of Tennessee William's long-forgotten screenplay, The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond, per the Hollywood Reporter.
Lohan will play Fisher Willow, a 1920s Southern debutante with a fondness for stirring up trouble.
The daughter of a Memphis plantation owner, Fisher has no patience for narrow-minded people and no problem with shocking and insulting those around her.
After she returns from studying abroad, Fisher falls in love with Jimmy (Chris Evans)—the son of an alcoholic father (David Strathairn) and an insane mother—who works at a store on Fisher's family plantation.
Fisher tries to pass her less-privileged lover off as an upper-class suitor in an effort to deceive her disapproving aunt (Ann-Margret), who controls the family fortune.
However, after she misplaces a diamond, her star-crossed relationship with Jimmy endures further strain.
Ellen Burstyn plays Lohan's mother in the film, which is due to begin production next year, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The script was discovered after Williams' death and published in the 1984 collection Stopped Rocking and Other Screenplays. It is believed to have been written in the 1950s.
In keeping with her stated goal of winning an Oscar before her 30th birthday, Lohan, 20, has lately been focusing on roles that cater more to the Academy Awards crowd than to the Kids' Choice set.
She recently signed on to star in the British film, The Best Times of Our Lives, in which she plays Caitlin, the wife of poet Dylan Thomas. Keira Knightley also stars in the film, which is based on a true story.
Up ahead, the actress appears in Bobby, an ensemble drama about the life of Robert Kennedy, which opens in wide release on Nov. 23.
She also stars in the upcoming Georgia Rule and Chapter 27. Both films are slated for release in 2007.
