Lilith's Last
Singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan fought back the weepies as she addressed reporters Tuesday in Canada--on the occasion of the last-ever (for now) Lilith Fair.
"I've made a lot of good friends and I think those relationships are going to endure and it's sad that it's ending," Lilith founder McLachlan said.
The all-grrl tour wrapped its 40-date summer excursion in Edmonton, Alberta. In announcing the 1999 lineup last June, McLachlan warned that--in the near future, at least--this would be the final edition of the groundbreaking series.
"For me, it's really the end of the era, too, because it's my last hurrah before I take a year off or five or something and write my next record and maybe start a family as well," McLachlan said Tuesday.
The last Lilith went down fighting--with the A-list likes of Sheryl Crow, the Dixie Chicks, the Indigo Girls and, yes, McLachlan taking the main stage.
"All that was missing was Helen Reddy leading a gang vocal of 'I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar,' " wrote Mike Ross for Canada's Jam! Showbiz.
Grammy-winner McLachlan launched Lilith in 1997 as a sort of response to the typically testosterone-charged likes of Lollapalooza. Lilith was open to any style of music--country, rock, R&B, folk, hip-hop--as long as said music was provided by a double-X chromosone-equipped performer. Jewel, Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega and the Pretenders were among the recording artists to sign up for the venture over the years.
McLachlan pulls the plug on Lilith while ticket sales and interest remains strong. She has said the tour could return in three years, 10 years--or, maybe stay away "forever."
