Letterman Stunt Falls Flat

It was no nipple, but a routine snowboarding stunt gone horribly wrong brought taping of Thursday's Late Show to a halt.

Pro snowboarder Tara Dakides, nicknamed "the Terrorizer," fell 25 feet from a custom-made ramp during an attempted jump for David Letterman's late-night talker.

The top-ranked rider had already successfully completed two jumps when she wiped out on her third attempt.

According to witnesses, Dakides could see she wasn't going to make it and yelled "Oh, s--t!" as she veered off the side of the U-shaped ramp set up outside the Sullivan Theater on West 53rd Street.

Her rep called it a "freak accident," while Late Show executive producer Rob Burnett offered this official explanation: She "slid off the landing platform and fell to the pavement below." Dakides reportedly suffered a large gash to the back of the head as a result.

The California native was rushed to New York's Bellevue Hospital where she received stitches and a visit from Letterman. She was listed in stable condition and was expected to be discharged on Friday.

"We hope Tara makes a full and complete recovery, and that she'll be back on The Late Show soon," said Burnett.

Letterman called off the show as a result of the accident and a repeat episode was aired. Drew Barrymore and Fountains of Wayne had been the scheduled guests for the evening.

Dakides was in town to give Dave a demonstration of her snowboarding skills and discuss her recent silver-medal win at the 2004 X Games.

Meanwhile, the wipeout hardly seems to have fazed the 28-year-old athlete. "The only thing I am upset about is that the French judge only gave me a 5.6," she joked from her hospital bed, according to a statement from her spokesman.
