Letterman: Sorry for Colombian Crack
The gap-tooth master of sarcasm sparked an international uproar last week when he joked that one of Colombia's top models had swallowed 50 bags of heroin in a smuggling attempt. Now he's saying he's sorry.
Attempting to make amends and placate Colombians protesting outside his Manhattan television studio, Letterman had Colombia's reigning beauty queen, Andrea Noceti, on Thursday's Late Show and promised her he would never again make fun of her country.
"I think I've learned my lesson," said Letterman.
Noceti, who made a quick exit in the first round of the Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico last week, threatened to sue the talk-show host over the comment, but instead agreed to come on Late Show as a guest and accept Letterman's apology in person.
"You hurt our feelings," the 23-year-old beauty queen chided Letterman.
"I'm terribly sorry," replied Letterman.
During his meeting with Noceti, he further atoned for his offending crack by proving he was a quick study of Colombian history, firing off facts about the South American nation, like "it's the second-oldest democracy in the western hemisphere."
He also invited the beauty queen to sing a song, then beckoned his audience to give her a standing ovation when she touted Colombian coffee as the best in the world.
Noceti, who made Letterman don her "Senorita Colombia" sash in retribution, said it was imperative that Americans and the world do not see her people in terms of the stereotypes associated with drugs, kidnappings and Colombia's volatile political situation.
"We have this stigmatized image of Colombia with drugs and I think it's not fair for us," she said.
"What message will you take about me and the United States back to your home country?" asked Letterman.
"You joke about what you shouldn't joke [about], but you're a nice man," replied the beauty queen, who presented Letterman with two gifts--a signed portrait of coffee pitchman Juan Valdes and a book about her hometown.
Colombia, with a population of 40 million, has been plagued by a 30-year civil war and a drug trade that has made it the world's leading supplier of cocaine and heroin and America's number one headache for its so-called war on drugs.
As the show was being taped inside the old Ed Sullivan theater Thursday afternoon, more than 100 protesters gathered outside waving Colombian flags and yelling chants such as "we have coffee and he wants cocaine."
Protesters weren't exactly happy with Miss Colombia's appearance on the show and jeered her with chants like, "Andrea sold out, Colombia did not."
Reps for Letterman didn't offer any further comment Friday. Instead, they said, the funnyman hoped Thursday night's show speaks for itself.
