Let the Sundance "Hustle" Begin

Twenty thousand moviegoers. More than 200 movies. At least two Kevins (Bacon and Costner). One request: Super Size Me.

The 2005 Sundance Film Festival opens Thursday night in Park City, Utah, with the world premiere of the comedy-drama Happy Endings, starring Lisa Kudrow, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Laura Dern and, perhaps in a nod to the event's big-tent policy, Tom Arnold.

Through Jan. 30, 120 features and 82 shorts will be screened at Robert Redford's winter wonderland for independent film, but only a handful are likely to emerge as bona fide box-office draws.

The Sundance Class of 2005, featuring contributions by studio stars Kevin Bacon, Kevin Costner and Keanu Reeves, will have to shine to live up to last year's crop, which included the breakout hits Open Water, Napoleon Dynamite, Garden State and Super Size Me, the upsetting tale of what happens when one man eats too much McDonald's.

Early favorites to achieve buzz-film status this month, judging by their already sold-out screenings, include:

Hustle & Flow, a drama about a Memphis pimp with rap-star dreams;
Inside Deep Throat, a documentary about the legendary porn movie;
Strangers with Candy, the feature version of the twisted Comedy Central series;
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, a look at the rise and corporate-scandal fall of the now-infamous energy company;
Ellie Parker, a comedy about a Los struggling Los Angeles actress, played by A-list Hollywood actress Naomi Watts;
Thumbsucker, a character piece about a teenager who sucks his thumb--and consults dentist Keanu Reeves;
Game 6, a comedy-drama about a playwright (Griffin Dunne) and a certain ground-ball moment from the 1986 World Series.

Ellie Parker, Hustle & Flow and Thumbsucker will be vying for top honors in the prestigious Dramatic Competition. Past winners there include American Splendor and The Brothers McMullen.

Big names who will by vying for, or boosting their, indie cred with Sundance-approved films include: David Schwimmer (Duane Hopwood); Pierce Brosnan (The Matador); Greg Kinnear (The Matador); Kevin Costner (The Upside of Anger); Kevin Bacon (Loverboy, which he directed); Daniel Day-Lewis (The Ballad of Jack and Rose); Liv Tyler (Lonesome Jim); and Laura Linney (The Squid and the Whale).

Nearly 80 movie-star types, from Joan Allen to Jeffrey Wright, are expected to descend on Park City in the next 10 days, according to a lineup compiled Thursday by the Salt Lake Tribune. (The newspaper likens the annual celeb influx to the swallows' annual migration to San Juan Capistrano, California.)

Other Hollywood-istas expected to drop in, per the Tribune, include: Adrien Brody, Chevy Chase, Benjamin McKenzie, Sarah Jessica Parker and Snoop Dogg.

McDonald's better be ready for the lunch rush.
