Leif Garrett Made for Rehabbing
Leif Garrett is taking matters out of his own hands.
The fallen teen idol, who was arrested last month and charged with heroin possession, voluntarily checked himself into a residential rehab facility this week after determining that he was not getting the help he needed as an outpatient.
"Even though it wasn't court ordered, I've decided that I think the best way to start out the program and get a good foundation...is to check in for 30 days," Garrett told ABC News last week. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to get cleaned up."
The move came after Garrett failed a drug test following what his lawyer referred to as "a little slip-up."
"There were two indications of dirty tests and he's admitted to one of them," attorney Andrew Flier told reporters Thursday after Garrett's appearance in drug court.
Despite the failed drug tests, Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Melissa Widdifield told Garrett he deserved credit for entering the live-in facility and for attending required meetings and counseling sessions. She ordered him to return to court Mar. 9 for another progress report hearing.
Garrett elected to enter the drug treatment program after violating his probation in a cocaine case stemming from a 2004 arrest. He has pleaded not guilty to the current charges against him.
The '70s pinup was nabbed by police on Jan. 14 after he allegedly tried to ride a Los Angeles subway without purchasing a ticket. A subsequent search turned up heroin among his belongings.
It was at least the fourth drug-related arrest for Garrett, who has already served several court-ordered stints in rehab.
This time around, Garrett said he is committed to getting his life back on track.
"I just want to get the clarity back," he told ABC News. "I want to look in the mirror and see some bright eyes."
His Tiger Beat centerfold/"I Was Made for Dancing" years may be long past, but Garrett can still boast a loyal fan base.
Message boards and forums devoted to the sometime actor-musician were deluged with words of support following his arrest.
"Just want you to know I am praying for you," one fan wrote on leifgarrettfans.com. "I know what you are going through been there done that and it isn't easy but I know you can do it. If I can do it you can to. Take care we all love you."
Garrett expressed his gratitude to his fans in a posting to his official Website.
"Thank you so much for your support, your love and words of encouragement," he wrote. "It's time for a change and I've got a little bit of work ahead of me but nothing I can't successfully achieve. Knowing that I have my friends standing behind me, it will make it all that much easier to be strong."
Visitors to the site were urged to contribute to Garrett's legal defense fund by downloading his song "Betty Ford for Xmas" via iTunes.
