"Legally Blonde" Takes Case to Tube

Apparently, blondes have more fun on the small screen.

MGM and Tribune Entertainment have sealed a deal to adapt Reese Witherspoon's Legally Blonde into a one-hour television series that will air on both a cable network and in syndication.

The tube version will seek to channel the same ditzy spirit of the original 2001 film and last year's sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red White & Blonde, as it follows Harvard's very own Perry Mason, Elle Woods, who uses her bubbly blond smarts and bottomless knowledge of beauty tips to solve cases.

Witherspoon--who earned a cool $15 million payday to reprise her role for the sequel--will not appear in the dramedy, which, like the movies, will draw its inspiration from the bestselling book by Amanda Brown.

Studio execs have yet to settle on a pretty-in-pink lead actress, let alone an executive producer or writer.

The project will be overseen by MGM, which wants to sell it to a major cable network and control international distribution, DVD and VHS and all merchandising and licensing. Tribune will handle advertising sales and make room on its stations so Legally Blonde can run in syndication. The companies will split the profits.

This isn't the first time MGM has tried to spinoff its Blonde ambitions.

Two years ago, the studio signed a deal with Touchstone TV for a half-hour Legally Blonde sitcom that would've aired on ABC. A pilot that was shot, but the Alphabet net declined to pick up the bubblegum comedy for its 2002-03 schedule.

MGM also considered transforming Legally Blonde into a Broadway musical. However, given the sequel's lackluster box office, those plans appear on hold for now.

If all goes as planned, Legally Blonde the TV series will debut in fall 2005.
