Left Eye Nixes Nuptials
That's the latest word from Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes publicist, who says plans for the singer to tie the knot with pro-footballer Andre Rison this week have indefinitely been shelved.
Matt Shelton, publicist for Lopes' label, Arista Records, tells the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the wackiest TLC-er will be in Los Angeles shooting a video Thursday, not Atlanta, where the nuptials were set to take place.
The video is for the 30-year-old Grammy-winner's upcoming solo project, Supernova, due out August 14. (After all, a girl's gotta keep her priorities straight.)
Rison, 34, a former Atlanta Falcons receiver who caught passes for the Oakland Raiders last season, sparked the matrimonial murmurs when he appeared on an Atlanta radio station last month and announced he and Lopes were ready to swap vows. Lopes had even reserved the Atlanta Botanical Garden for the ceremony.
Other than the video shoot, there's no word on why the ceremony was scrapped (calls to Shelton's office weren't returned Tuesday), but the publicist is quoted in the Journal-Constitution as saying he still expects the two to marry. Someday.
Of course, the Lopes-Rison union isn't your most conventional of couplings. Following a fight in 1994, the singer set fire to the $1.3 million Alpharetta, Georgia, home they shared. Lopes pleaded guilty to arson charges, and later did the first of two stints in alcohol rehab.
Then last fall, Lopes' friends put out an all-points bulletin (via the New York Post's Page Six) saying she had disappeared without a trace after missing a major press conference. Concern later died down amid reports that she had been spotted with then-boyfriend Sean Newman in London (supposedly shopping for wedding rings), as well as in New Orleans, Chicago and Honduras.
But it appears nothing can stop the fireworks between Rison and Lopes. According to the Journal-Constitution, the couple spoke about their bizarre relationship while attending the 2000 Grammy Awards together. "You know, me and Andre just have a bond that no one will understand," she said. "Sometimes, even I don't."
